Hwachae Less Sweet Version

Hwachae is a refreshing summer drink that offers both sweet and sour flavors. It is a nutrient-rich beverage, as it is made with a variety of fruits and can be low in calories, especially when prepared without added sugars and sweeteners. It also contains plenty of water from fresh, juicy fruits like watermelon and can be helpful for hydration. Some fruits (particularly watermelon) contain enzymes that help with digestion.

Ingredients

  • 1.2 watermelon
  • 1 Cup  chopped strawberries
  • 1 Cup chopped canned peaches
  • 1 Cup milk
  • 1/2 Cup cranberry juice
  • 1 Can carbonated water

Method

  1. Prepare the Fruits: Start by cutting the watermelon and strawberries into bite-sized pieces. You can use a melon baller to create round watermelon chunks for a decorative touch. Chop peaches, and if using other fruits like mangoes or kiwis, slice them as well.
  2. Chill the Ingredients: Refrigerate the fruits, soda, and strawberry milk before combining. This keeps the drink fresh and prevents it from becoming soggy.
  3. Mix the Ingredients: In a large punch bowl, combine the watermelon, strawberries, peaches, and any additional fruits like berries or mangoes. Add the soda and strawberry milk to the fruit mixture.
  4. Add Ice and Garnish: Toss in large ice cubes to keep the drink cool. Garnish with mint sprigs or edible flowers for an extra pop of color.
  5. Serve in Clear Glassware: For the best presentation, serve the hwachae in clear glassware to showcase the vibrant fruits. Serve immediately for the freshest taste and maximum carbonation.
